SE Ranking vs Screaming Frog
These two tools are not really competitors. You are probably comparing the wrong thing. One tracks your rankings from the cloud; the other crawls your site from your desktop. Here is which job each one is for, and where a third option fits.

The short answer
A rank tracker and a site crawler solve different problems. Most people searching “SE Ranking vs Screaming Frog” are trying to work out whether one subscription can replace the other. Usually it cannot, so pick by the job in front of you.
you need daily rank tracking, historical position data across locations and devices, and client-facing dashboards. That is what it is built for.
you want a fast, flexible desktop crawler and are happy interpreting raw data yourself. It is the power-user standard for technical crawls.
you want the desktop crawl depth with a plain-English fix for every issue, Search Console, Bing and Core Web Vitals on every plan, and no URL cap.
Side by side
They’re not the same category
SE Ranking is a cloud SEO platform: rank tracking and reporting are the core, and a website audit is one module among many. Screaming Frog is a desktop crawler that hands you raw data to interpret. That difference decides where your client’s data lives, whether you can crawl a staging site behind a login, and what you are actually paying for.

Screaming Frog’s licence prices were verified 7 September 2026 against screamingfrog.co.uk/seo-spider/pricing and are unchanged. SE Ranking’s figures come from seranking.com/subscription.html and were re-read 9 September 2026. Their plan structure is unchanged: two plans, Core with 10 projects and one manager seat and Growth with 30 projects and three, on the same 20% discount for paying annually. Their page prices in the visitor’s own currency and it showed us pounds in August and euros in September, so the euro figures above are what it served a UK connection that day rather than a price list we can promise you. Read it for your own country before you buy, and note that vendors change plans often.
Crawling: what actually gets audited
SE Ranking’s website audit runs in the cloud against a monthly page allowance: 250,000 pages a month on Core, up to two million on Growth. That is generous for most sites, but the crawl happens on their infrastructure, so auditing a staging site behind a login means allowlisting their crawler at your host or CDN first.
Screaming Frog runs from your machine. The free tier caps a crawl at 500 URLs; the £199-a-year licence removes the cap, and JavaScript rendering and scheduled crawls are in both the free and paid versions. Because it runs locally, it will happily crawl a password-protected staging site or throttle itself against a fragile client server. The trade-off is that it gives you raw data. You do the interpreting.
If what you actually need is that crawl depth without the desktop-only raw-data workflow, and without paying platform prices for a rank tracker you won’t use, that is the gap Crawl Cove fills. Read the full breakdowns on our SE Ranking alternative and why SEOs leave Screaming Frog pages.
Rank tracking and reporting: where SE Ranking wins
This is the honest part. SE Ranking is genuinely good at things a crawler does not do: daily keyword position tracking across locations and devices, historical trend data, competitor visibility, and polished client-facing dashboards. White-label reporting is available through the Agency Pack add-on (€59/mo, and it is sold on annual billing only). If keeping a live picture of where a client ranks is the job, SE Ranking is built for it and Screaming Frog simply does not compete.
Crawl Cove is not a rank tracker either. We would rather say so than pretend. If you want positions without paying for a platform, there is a free middle path: our guide on tracking keyword rankings for free builds a longitudinal rank story straight from Google Search Console, no paid tracker required. But if daily rank tracking is central to your work, keep SE Ranking. This comparison is about the audit, not the rankings.
What each one costs, and what you’re paying for
SE Ranking is a platform subscription: Core is €109/mo (€87.20 on annual billing) with 10 projects and one manager seat; Growth is €235/mo (€188 annual) with 30 projects and three seats, with extra manager seats from €14.40. White-label client reporting is a separate €59/mo add-on. You are buying the whole platform (rank tracking, reporting and the audit) even if the audit is the part you use most.
Screaming Frog is a flat £199-a-year licence per user. Cheap for a single power user, but it is a raw-data crawler with no ranking or reporting layer, and its integrations lean on your own Google account and a PageSpeed API key.
Crawl Cove prices per plan, not per user, from £14.99/mo (Solo), £69.99/mo (Studio, up to 10 client projects) and £169.99/mo (Agency, unlimited client projects), with Search Console, Bing, Core Web Vitals and white-label reports on every tier rather than sold as add-ons, Search Console connected in one click and Bing and Core Web Vitals with a free key each. For an agency running audits across many clients, the maths is about how many projects and seats you need and whether you are also paying for rank tracking you don’t use. Every finding, ranked and explained
A single crawl feeds one table: filter by check, category or severity, and impact score keeps the highest-value fixes at the top instead of buried in a raw export.
A third option
Where Crawl Cove fits: the crawl and the fix.
Crawl Cove is a desktop SEO crawler that runs locally like Screaming Frog, then adds what raw data doesn’t: a plain-English fix for every issue, severity-ranked. Google Search Console, Bing and Core Web Vitals are on every plan at no extra cost, Search Console in one click, Bing and Core Web Vitals with a free key each, there is no URL cap, audits are versioned so you can prove the fix, and multi-client projects are native, all on your machine. It is not a rank tracker, and it is not a cloud platform. If the audit is the job, it is the focused tool for it.

Frequently asked questions
- Is SE Ranking or Screaming Frog better?
- Neither. They do different jobs. SE Ranking is a cloud SEO platform whose strengths are daily rank tracking, historical position data and client reporting. Screaming Frog is a desktop crawler that pulls raw technical data off a site. If you need to watch keyword positions over time, SE Ranking wins; if you need to crawl a site and audit it, a dedicated crawler is the right tool. Many SEOs end up wanting one of each.
- Can Screaming Frog replace SE Ranking?
- Only for the crawl. Screaming Frog crawls and audits a site from your machine, but it does not track keyword rankings, store historical positions or build client dashboards. That is SE Ranking's core. If rank tracking is why you pay for SE Ranking, a crawler will not replace it. If the site audit is what you use most, a crawler will.
- Is there a cheaper alternative to SE Ranking for audits?
- If it is the audit you use rather than the rank tracker, yes. Crawl Cove is a desktop SEO crawler from £14.99/mo with no URL caps and Search Console, Bing and Core Web Vitals on every plan, instead of a platform subscription from €109/mo plus a €59/mo annual-only add-on for white-label reporting (read from the UK, 9 September 2026). It is not a rank tracker, so keep SE Ranking if daily positions are the point.
- Does SE Ranking have a desktop app like Screaming Frog?
- No. SE Ranking is a cloud platform: the audit runs on their servers and you work in the browser. Screaming Frog and Crawl Cove are desktop applications that crawl from your own machine, which matters for staging sites behind a login, crawl-rate control on a fragile server, and keeping client data local.
