The short version
If you are on a Mac and you want a light crawler that hands you a short, client-ready list of fixes, Lil Robots is the newer, cheaper way in, and its free mode is enough to audit a small site. If you need depth and configurability, or you are not on a Mac, Screaming Frog is still the more capable crawler and it runs everywhere. On Windows the choice is narrower than it looks, because the Lil Robots crawler is not available for it yet.

- It has a free mode with no card required, capped at 100 URLs and 100 links analysed per crawl. - Do either of them send my crawl data to a server?
- No, and this is where the two genuinely agree. Both are local crawlers: the crawl runs from your own machine and the page data stays there. Lil Robots states that crawled URLs, page content, metadata and link text are processed on your machine and that they never see your crawl data. That is the same model Screaming Frog and Crawl Cove use, and it is why a local crawler can reach staging on a VPN, localhost or IP allowlist that a cloud auditor cannot get anywhere near. Screaming Frog can also authenticate straight into a password-protected staging site, and since Crawl Cove 1.2.0 (27 September 2026) so can Crawl Cove: both HTTP Basic Auth and form-based logins are supported, with credentials stored encrypted per site.
