Turn a crawl export into an SEO audit workbook in Google Sheets

crawlcove-sheets is a Google Sheets add-on, written in Apps Script, that imports a Crawl Cove crawl export into a standard SEO audit workbook. Paste the export or name a file on your Drive and it writes six sheets: a Summary, every Page with its 29 export columns, an Issues list, Issues by type, Pages by status, and Title and meta flags with conditional formatting. No formulas to copy, and the issue rules are the same ones the MCP server and the JavaScript library use, so the sheet and an AI assistant agree on the numbers. It reads both formats the desktop app writes, JSON and CSV, and a Screaming Frog export once converted with crawlcove-sf-import.

Install it in a spreadsheet

# two minutes, no add-on store (crawlcove-sheets README, Install):
1. Open a Google Sheet. Extensions > Apps Script.
2. Replace the default Code.gs with two files: lib.gs from src/lib.js and Code.gs from src/Code.js.
3. Save, reload the spreadsheet. A "Crawl Cove" menu appears.
4. Crawl Cove > Import export from Drive... or Paste export (JSON or CSV)...

# with clasp: copy .clasp.json.example to .clasp.json, set your script ID, then
npm run push

The six sheets it writes

Summary pages crawled, indexable, pages with issues, issue count, export time, run id, page-cap hit
Pages one row per URL, all 29 export columns + "Issues on page"; 3xx amber, 4xx/5xx red
Issues one row per issue: type, URL, detail
Issues by type count per type with a one-line meaning, fixed order for charting
Pages by status count per HTTP status, plus No response / Fetch error
Title & meta flags every 200 page: missing / too long / short / ok, colour-coded

The README in the repo is the authoritative reference; the commands above are copied from it as of September 2026. If they disagree, the README is newer.

What you get

  • Summary: pages crawled, indexable pages, pages with issues, issue count, export time, run id, and whether the crawl hit its page cap.
  • Pages: one row per crawled URL with all 29 export columns plus the issues on that page, a filter and a frozen header; 3xx rows amber, 4xx and 5xx red.
  • Issues and Issues by type: one row per issue with its URL and detail, and a count per type with a one-line meaning in a fixed order you can chart.
  • Pages by status: a count per HTTP status, plus No response and Fetch error.
  • Title and meta flags: every 200 page with its title and meta description lengths flagged missing, too long, short or ok, colour-coded.
  • Re-importing overwrites those six sheets and leaves any other tab in the workbook alone, so your own analysis tabs survive.

Limits worth knowing

  • It is not in the Google Workspace Marketplace; install is the two-minute Apps Script paste, or clasp.
  • The first run asks for permission to edit the spreadsheet, show dialogs and read your Drive. The script sends data nowhere: it reads the file you name and writes sheets in the current workbook.
  • A ready-made template workbook with the script installed and charts on the Summary tab is planned but not published yet.

Works with Crawl Cove

Google Sheets SEO audit add-on covers the checks it lists above. The desktop app runs the full site audit: every page, every finding ranked by impact, history over time and Search Console data alongside. See the desktop checker or compare the plans.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an SEO audit template for Google Sheets?
It is the working half of one. Instead of a blank template you fill by hand, it builds the audit workbook from a real crawl: pages, issues, counts by type and status, and title and meta flags. The data comes from a Crawl Cove export, so the sheet reflects the site rather than a checklist.
Where does the export come from?
From the Crawl Cove desktop app: crawl the site, open Reports, export JSON or CSV. Both formats import. A Screaming Frog Internal export works too once converted with crawlcove-sf-import.
Does it send my crawl data anywhere?
No. The script runs inside your Google account, reads the file you name on Drive or the text you paste, and writes sheets in the workbook it is installed in. The Drive permission is read-only and used only to fetch that one file.
Why are the issue counts different from the app's report?
The sheet applies the export-level rules the MCP server and the JavaScript library share: broken page, missing, long or duplicate title, missing or long meta, missing or multiple H1, noindex, redirect chain, missing canonical. The desktop app runs a far larger check set on the live pages, keeps history, and ranks findings by impact once Search Console is connected, which is what the report is for; the sheet is for sharing with a client or building your own pivots.
