Generative answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews assemble their answers from passages, not whole pages. A passage is easiest to lift when it already reads as a question and a direct answer. Crawl Cove's ai-answer-structure check flags substantial pages that offer neither signal.
What this finding means
This check looks at every indexable page with at least 400 words of body content and asks whether it exposes an explicit question-and-answer shape: FAQPage or QAPage JSON-LD, or a question-form H2 or H3 section heading, one ending in a question mark, followed by its answer. A page skips the check entirely if it returned anything other than a 200, carries a noindex directive, or falls short of the word-count floor, since a short or non-indexable page is not what this is built to evaluate.
A real finding looks like this:
No FAQ/Q&A schema and no question-style headings, so content is hard for generative engines to extract as a direct answer.
One finding per page, and it only fires when both signals are absent; either one on its own clears the check.
Why it matters
A long, well-written page organised entirely around statement headings, "Our Approach", "Key Benefits", "What Sets Us Apart", still has to be read start to finish for a model to find the one sentence that answers a specific question. A page that instead poses the question directly, as an FAQ block or as a heading such as "How long does X take?", hands the model an already-bounded unit to quote. Neither guarantees a citation, but it removes a real piece of friction: extracting an answer from unstructured prose is harder than lifting one that is already shaped like one.
How to fix it
- Pick the real questions your page already answers. Look for the two or three things a reader actually wants to know from this specific page, not generic marketing headings restated as questions.
- Turn them into H2 or H3 headings that end in a question mark, each followed directly by a concise, self-contained answer, so the heading and the paragraph beneath it can stand alone as one unit.
- Add FAQPage JSON-LD for the same questions if the page suits it, which gives machine-readable structure on top of the visible heading, though the visible heading alone already satisfies this check.
- Keep the answer close to the question. A question heading followed by three paragraphs before the actual answer defeats the point; the value is in the answer being immediately extractable, not just present somewhere on the page.
- Re-crawl the page to confirm the finding clears once the Q&A structure is in place.
Note
Google retired the FAQ rich result from Search in mid-2026, so FAQPage schema no longer changes how a page looks in Google's own results. It is still valid, standard schema.org markup, and it is exactly the machine-readable signal this check and other AI answer engines look for, so adding it remains worthwhile for AI visibility even though it no longer buys a Search snippet.
False positives and edge cases
- This is an opportunity flag, not a defect. Nothing about a missing Q&A block is broken; the finding is
infoseverity because it names a way to make a good page easier to quote, not a problem to fix urgently. - A page can pass with heading questions alone, no schema needed. The check accepts a question-form H2 or H3 exactly as readily as FAQPage JSON-LD, so a well-structured page with visible Q&A headings and no structured data at all still clears it.
- Pages under 400 words, non-200 responses and noindexed pages are skipped entirely, not flagged as failing. A short utility page or a transactional page such as a cart or login screen is not what this check is built to evaluate, so it produces no finding either way for those.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this the same thing as the ai-extractability check?
- No, they measure different things and can disagree. This check looks for one specific signal, an explicit question-and-answer shape, and only on longer pages. ai-extractability scores several structural signals together and applies to any indexable page. A page can pass one and fail the other.
- Does this mean my page will never be quoted by ChatGPT or Perplexity?
- No. This is a heuristic opportunity flag, not a penalty or a proof of anything. A well-written page with only statement headings can still be summarised by an AI answer engine; adding an explicit Q&A block just makes lifting a direct quote easier.
- Why does this only fire on longer pages?
- A short page rarely needs an explicit Q&A block to be understood at a glance, so flagging one would be noise. The check only evaluates pages with a meaningful amount of content, where a reader, or a model, benefits from the content being chunked into direct answers.
- Do the questions need to be literal FAQPage schema, or do heading questions count too?
- Either counts on its own. FAQPage or QAPage JSON-LD is the machine-readable version; a question-form H2 or H3 heading followed by a direct answer works for the same reason, since both give a model an already-bounded question and answer to lift.
